Cloth diapers rock

I decided long before I ever got pregnant that I would cloth diaper. Being an environmentalist, I knew I could not put all those disposable diapers in the landfill... Plus, cloth is nicer on babies skin. Yes, cloth diapers use water and electricity to wash, but the negative environmental effects of disposable are much worse. Also, a lot of people don't realize this but cloth is a lot cheaper! Even though one diaper can be anywhere between $3 and $33 (I KNOW!), it's still cheaper. I've heard that disposable diapers can cost about $5,000 over the "diaper life" of a baby. We will spend way less than $2,000 on the diapers for our TWO babies (we went the expensive but easy route). That doesn't include the water and electricity but it won't add up to anywhere near $8,000!

Anyway, cloth diapering can seem complicated at first. There are many different kinds - styles, fabrics, brands, etc. I probably put 40 hours of research into it before I bought anything. But it can be really fun and actually addictive. I know, sounds weird... but it's fun to shop for diapers - they come in great styles and patterns. Very cute! You can see some of the fun I've had with this camo diaper on Jackson!

We ended up going the easy route with one-size fits all "All in One" diapers. These are one-piece, just as easy to put on as a disposable. The worst part is swishing it in the toilet to get the poop out! My little ones only poop every day or two so it's not so bad! We use cloth wipes as well, of course. Much nicer on the skin than paper and chemicals!

I wash the diapers at home. It's not a big deal. I do it daily but it's not hard to put them in the washer, turn it on, put them in the dryer, turn it on... that's it.

If you're interested, I buy most of my diapers from abbyslane.com. They have free shipping and a 5% discount. And the owner Stephanie has great customer service!

Using cloth diapers is a good way to meet people too! Today, the three of us went to our local San Diego Real Diaper Association meeting. :-)

  1. That diaper looks like you don't need pins either. Good deal. I always used cloth too, but that was back in the day when it wasn't a big deal. Becki was actually allergic to the plastic on the disposable ones. Thanks for keeping out environment cleaner.
