We have our first ear infection. Is that some kind of rite of passage for parents?
J & V have both had a lot of colds lately. They get better and then get sick again. Last night, Veronica was wheezing so I called the nurse line to see if I should take her in. They said yes. So I put her to bed at 6:30 and then woke her at 8 for her 8:30 appt. (She did not seem bothered at all, she was a little cranky but not overly sick-looking...) They said indeed she had some lung constriction and congestion. They also checked her ears and found both to be infected! Poor baby.
They gave her a breathing treatment (not that fun) and three prescriptions. So we went to the pharmacy at 10:30 pm and ended up back at home around 11:30. Late night for a little one but she took it in stride! She was actually in a great mood all night - she was playing with toys in the waiting room, dancing in the exam room, talking away at me in the car while we waited for her prescriptions. Funny little thing! She was super excited to see daddy when we got home, too. You would have thought she could stay up all night partying! And actually, one of the meds I gave her is supposed to make them a little hyper... so when I checked on her 30 min after putting her to bed for the final time, she was still up - just laying there hanging out.
I feel bad about it because I didn't recognize that she was sick. I did see her play with her ears a few times but I figured she was signing "apple" or something. And a day or two ago I did see her acting strange like she was dizzy or off-balance. But I figured it was just a toddler acting like a toddler, you know? Now I know to watch for more subtle signs.
Of course now I'm paranoid that Jackson may have ear infections too (because twins are practically the same person, right)? So I have to decide whether or not to take him in too.
Why can't parenthood be an exact science? ;-)

Sounds like you're doing a great job despite the fact it so fraut with "peril" - must make you really appreciate all the more what our parents had to go through.
ReplyDeleteThat's no fun! Randy and I had no idea when Olivia had her first ear infection either. She was actually not acting sick and then all of the sudden there was green goop in her eyes. We thought it was related to a tear duct problem that we thought was over. We took her to the Dr. to get her eye checked and learned she had a double ear infection. It's so hard to know!
ReplyDeletejust like the drs. they're just 'practicing' medicine. Why should we be any better :)
