Our first family vacation (Part 2)

After five days in South Dakota, it was time to drive to Chicago for our friends Lauren and Kevin's wedding. Aunt Mary and Uncle Darren drove us three hours to the Minneapolis area where we picked up our rental minivan. We then drove another six hours to arrive in Woodstock, IL (outside Chicago) around 10 pm, I think. Our hotel room was decked out with two portable cribs and the babies again slept great!

The next day, Saturday, daddy went to hang out with Kevin while we three stayed around the hotel room and napped. It was difficult to work around meals and naptime, and get myself and the babies ready for the wedding. So... we were about 30 min late! The wedding was just starting but the babies were not in the mood! So we walked around the church lobby, said hi to everyone after the wedding and then headed back to the hotel for another nap. :-) We tried again to successfully go out - to the reception - and we had success! The babies were well behaved and happy at the reception. We ate and danced and listened to music for a while. Veronica and Jackson were clapping to the music, it was cute!

The next day we drove into the city to visit with Aunt Jenny, Uncle Sean and little Vivian (8 months old). Jenny and I have been best friends since third grade. Ironically, we had our first babies just a few months apart! Veronica especially was quite interested in Vivian and they became quick friends. We went out for a nice (and messy, of course) lunch and left Chicago around 4 pm for Detroit.

(Side note - before leaving on our vacation, J and V had some crazy poop. After switching from formula to milk, their poop got soft and yucky and copious! It remained this way, unfortunately, throughout our whole trip. We switched to soy milk per the dr's instruction and then back to formula per the dr's instruction, but to no avail... On the way to Detroit we had our first and only (so far) poop "situation" where poop leaked out J's diaper and into the car seat. Fortunately, we had planned for that and had put a rag behind him so the seat didn't get poop on it. And actually, I take that back - it wasn't our first incident! The first was on the way from the Minneapolis airport to Gary, South Dakota with grandma and grandpa. J (again!) pooped so much while sitting in his highchair - in a restaurant! - the poop leaked out the back of his diaper and onto the FLOOR! Oops!! That was an adventure... Needless to say, we were lucky to have extra help on the trip and often utilized two-person diaper changing techniques!)

Unfortunately, we didn't get any pictures of our time in Chicago. Or did we? Hmmm, I'll have to check the video camera. And I think Aunt Jenny got some. I'll go email her to send them to me...

(Part 3 of our vacation coming soon)

  1. you guys are very lucky if you didn't have any 'blowouts' til after a year. wow! Glad you had a great time at the wedding reception. I think it's sad that kids aren't included in a lot of wedding today (I can understand it, but the kids really enjoy music and activities like dancing). Glad you had a good part 2

  2. The very first time I wore both boys at the same time, we had been doing a car nap, and stopped in swanky downtown Portland to visit my sister at the high-end stationer she works at. I had Shoghi in the meitai on my front, and Max in the Ergo on my back. Fast forward, we're standing in the shop when I notice something on my pants... I thought S had spit up, but it was POOP, all down my shirt and pants, covering his clothes and the meitai.

Because we'd just been nap driving, I had NO wipes, NO diapers, NO extra clothes. I had to strip him down to his birthday suit, put him in his carseat and cover him the best I could with my poopy shirt for the 20-minute drive home.

What an adventure - I'll never forget it.
